VIDEO: ABC News’ Gio Benitez sits down with Harvey Fierstein and Michel Urie for a “Torch Song”
When Harvey Fierstein carried his Torch Song Trilogy to Broadway in 1982, skeptics doubted it would be little more than a flicker on the Great White Way. Would anyone care about an effeminate, gay, Jewish, drag queen looking for love, or sit still for four hours while he was? Audiences certainly did and they kept coming for three years and 1,222 performances (an unparalleled record by any recent play on Broadway).
In its first Broadway revival, the critically acclaimed, Torch Song (a revised 2:45) starring Michael Urie and Mercedes Ruehl reprise their roles from last season’s sold out off-Broadway run.
ABC News’ Gio Benitez talked with Harvey Fierstein about his Tony Award winning play then and now, and to its leading man, Michael Urie about the impact of Torch Song on our Community and future.
Torch Song plays at The Helen Hayes Theater now through January 6th 2019
