John Oliver Exposes the Reality of Repugnant Republican Voter Suppression Laws: VIDEO

When President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 protecting and ensuring fair and equal access to the ballot box, it essential fulfilled the ideal of America as a multi-racial democracy. But in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, which was declared by the previous administration’s own departments as “the most secure election in American history,” the former President who lost propagates a “Big Lie” about voter fraud to this day without a scintilla of evidence.
But his wrath is so fearful, and Republicans acutely aware they are a party without policy win hearts and minds of voters, 361 “voting integrity” bills have been introduced in GOP controlled statehouses. These election bills have already passed in Iowa, Florida, and most notably in Texas. Republicans may call them “voting integrity laws,” but the fact of the matter is, it’s voter suppression.
A Texan will be the first say, “you can call manure ‘fertilizer’ if you want to but it don’t change the fact that it’s still horseshit.” What’s more these GOP voter suppression laws don’t smell half as good, as John Oliver reported in his main story on Last Week Tonight.

There is simply nothing more important than protecting voting rights and free and fair election which cannot be overturned by state legislature when they do not like how the voice of the people has spoken. Without it, we are no longer a democracy. Without it, no social, justice, health or economic equity initiatives matter because in an autocracy those issues and rights are decided for you. This isn’t hyperbole the threat to American democracy from Republicans is eminent and fatal as Mark Elise delineate in his article from Democracy Docket.
