Broadway’s Ben Platt channels his inner Judy Garland

By TheatreRat

Broadway’s newest “It Boy,” 23yo Ben Platt, current star of the smash hit musical, Dear Evan Hansen recently got the chance to live out his childhood fantasy.  He performed Judy Garland’s timeless torch song, “The Man that Got Away.”

The occasion for his heart wrenching rendition was New York’s MCC Theatre’s 30th Anniversary, “Miscast” Gala.  As described by,

“In the vein of creating unconventional theatre and supporting daring new voices, Miscast features performances by the greatest talents in New York theatre singing songs from roles in which they would otherwise be “miscast.”

Here is Ben Platt’s stellar performance from this year’s event.

We feel you Ben.

Here’s his star turn, “Waving through a Window” from Dear Evan Hansen.

Given Dear Even Hansen’s critical acclaim; its Academy Award winning composer and lyricist, Justin Paul and Benj Pasek (the team behind La La Land); and Ben Platt’s performance, expect to hear a lot more about all of them in the next few months as the theatre award season in New York shifts into high gear.

And don’t be surprised to see them take home top honors at the Tony Awards, Sunday June 11th.
