Where My PEEPS At?

The only holiday food more hotly contested than Thanksgiving’s canned cranberry sauce vs real cranberry sauce is Easter’s marshmallow PEEPS® candy.  You either love them or hate them; but the debate doesn’t stop there.  Among peeps lovers is the controversial question of whether they are best eaten fresh out of the box or stale after the package has been opened and the pillowy candies allowed to “ripen” anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Regardless of which side you fall on about PEEPS®, everyone can agree they’re story is kinda fascinating; not to mention PEEPS® are a great source of entertainment.  Entertainment?  Yep! but more on that later.  Let’s first take a look at PEEPS® century old story.  (See? Betcha didn’t know they’ve been around since the Roaring 20s.)

The Just Born candy company who makes PEEPS® was founded in 1923 in New York, and moved to their current location in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1932.  From their website come these fun factoids.

In 1953, it took 27 hours to create one PEEPS® Marshmallow Chick.  Today, thanks to advances in technology, it takes six minutes.

In the late 1950s PEEPS® wings were “clipped” to give them a sleek, modern look.

Yellow and white PEEPS® Chicks and Bunnies came first, followed by pink, lavender, blue, green and orange.  Yellow is America’s bestselling color of PEEPS® Chicks and Bunnies.

PEEPS® eyes are actually made of wax that get sprayed on by machine.

Each PEEPS® Chick has 28 calories and Bunnies have 27.5 calories.  Both have 0 grams of fat.

PEEPS® are produced at a rate of 5.5 million every day!  (That’s a gustatory nightmare for all the haters)

Just Born produces enough PEEPS® Brand Marshmallow Candies in one year to circle the earth twice.

If you had 8,000 PEEPS® Bunnies, and you stood them in a straight vertical line, you could reach the top of the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago.

PEEPS® shelf life is 24 months (giving Twinkies a run for their money.)

How PEEPS® are made is pretty amazing!

(In the time it took you to watch that video, thousands of PEEPS® were made start to finish!)

As we said, PEEPS® are not just edible they’re entertaining too.  Check out these cool science experiments!

PEEPS® are also a form of artistic expression and competition.  Yes there really are competitive PEEPS® art shows.

From their website, here are a host of fabulous works of art.

But possibly the best form of PEEPS® entertainment, especially if you hate those little yellow chicks is destruction by microwave.

Happy PEEPSter!
