Holding Back Transgender Student Athletes, Nightline’s Special Report: VIDEO
In our diverse Community the one thing we all have in common is the experience of “coming out as…” It is a life changing step at any age, and today more young people are bravely living their truth than ever. But in “the land of the free and home of brave” dozes of states have stated passing laws prohibiting transgender student athletes from competing as equals with their peers.
They are one of many such transphobic laws being passed in Republican controlled statehouses, but this kind is particularly egregious. Targeting the most vulnerable and defenseless in our Community, our children, it denies them the opportunities, lessons, sense of belonging that comes with team sports. In short, it ostracizes them for being courageous and honest about who they are as human beings.
In her special report, “Fair Play” ABC News Nightline co-anchor Juju Chang, spoke to the people involved in one court case in Connecticut and the pending transphobic legislation in Missouri.
She also looks into the history of transgender athletes as well as the facts about their supposed performance advantages.
