Today I’m excited to be part of the world’s largest Pride March in New York City! Even more so, I’m honored to be marching with the LGBT Community Center as it celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. (Fortieth is Ruby no less!)
Founded in 1983, “The Center” as it’s known to New Yorkers provides services and programs to more than 18K LGBTQ individuals every year, welcomes 6,000 visitors every week, and hosts 300 organizations.

The Center is also where Larry Kramer gave an impassioned speech on the AIDS crisis in 1987 as part of the Center’s “Second Tuesdays” speaker series. That night ACTUP was formed and changed the course of fighting back against the plague of AIDS ravaging the Community.
“AIDS is a plague – numerically, statistically and by any definition known to modern public health – though no one in authority has the guts to call it one!”
– Larry Kramer
Today would have been Larry Kramer’s 88th birthday.
The Center’s contingent is in the first unit of The March so with any luck we’ll make ABC News Live’s coast to coast live streaming broadcast “Pride Across America” starting at 11am ET.
