The list of people at the pivotal intersection of the Black and LGBTQ communities and their struggle and alliance for equality, civil rights, justice, and basic respect in America is short but iconic, names like Bayard Rustin, James Baldwin, Marsha P. Johnson, and Audre Lorde. One more name can be and should be added to that list actor, singer, director, writer, fashionista, and Emmy/Grammy/Tony Award winner, and advocate, Billy Porter.
One might also say, “an unstoppable force of nature” for Billy Porter is truly the living embodiment of “success being where preparation meets opportunity.” He’s been fiercely preparing for every moment since the fifth grade. This week his new single, “Children” drops on October 15th and four day later is the release of his eagerly anticipated memoir, Unprotected.
CBS Sunday Morning’s Seth Doane sat down with the multi-talented, ever outspoken Porter for a look at what went into transforming a boy from Pittsburgh into an inspirational global icon.
