With the critical success of the star powered film adaptation of Garrard Conley’s memoir, Boy Erased, the subject of gay conversion therapy is back in the spotlight. Despite the AMA, APA, and other professional oversite organizations widely denouncing the practice as not only ineffective but harmful, it is still legal in an overwhelming majority of states. In some cases, it is “practiced” on children as young as 10 years old.
Many organizations who promised to “pray the gay away” have closed down, including the largest “Exodus” who went so far as to issue an apology to the Gay Community in 2016. Still Evangelicals with their powerful DC lobbyist are fighting to protect their “right” to continue conversion therapy, that many would and have called child abuse.
CBS Sunday Morning looked into the very personal effects’ conversion therapy has had on the lives of the people it has touched in this report.
