August is traditionally the month Hollywood “takes out the trash,” by dumping all their Razzie Award contenders on movie going audiences. (Have you seen the previews for The Meg? It makes Sharknado, look like The Godfather.)
With Labor Day just around the corner it means the local cineplex is about to be filled with quality films again sure as the front yard with autumn leaves. For gay film buffs there is plenty to get excited about. Most of the buzz has been about the Freddy Mercury bio-pic Bohemian Rhapsody, but the little gay film with enormous star power is Boy Erased.
Based on Garrard Conley’s memoir of the same name, it tells his story of growing up the son of a Baptist preacher who is sent to a Christian conversion camp to be cured of his homosexuality. Boy Erased stars Academy Award winners Russell Crowe, Nichole Kidman; two time Tony Award winner, Cherry Jones; and Academy Nominee for Manchester By the Sea, Lucas Hedges.
Boy Erased opens November 2nd, the same day as Bohemian Rhapsody. (Get the jumbo popcorn and make it a double feature!)
Fun Factoid — Lucas Hedges has appeared in four films that were nominated for Best Picture: The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Manchester by the Sea (2016), Lady Bird (2017) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017).
